Separated by the Bass Strait the State Of Tasmania is 200km from Mainland Australia. It's capital is Hobart which is home to approximately 200 thousand people, which is just under half of Tasmania's total population. Although inhabited by the indigenous peoples long before, it wasn't until November 24th 1642 that Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. In the public eye Tasmania has always installed a sense of mystery, partially due to the fact that very few foreigners choose it as a holiday destination so it remains a mystery, but also because of the very strange unique animals the island has. the Tasmanian Devil is one such example. It's name has done much to help Tasmania's shroud of mystery, the Tasmania Devil is in actual fact a carnivorous marsupial. Frankly the creature doesn't really deserve the title "Devil" it is an elegant looking animal which sadly is endangered. This is due mainly to a disease known as Facial Tumor Disease, the Tasmanian Government is currently running programs to help combat this illness and save this beautiful animal. Another animal that is knee deep in mystery is the indigenous Thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger. The closest living relative to this thought extinct marsupial is the Tasmanian Devil. The last "Tazzy Tiger" died in captivity in 1936, although there are no confirmed sightings of this creature there is hope that isolated pockets may be living still somewhere on the island.
